Who doesn’t like a hot cinnamon roll AND a piping hot bowl of chili? These two are definitely better together; the doughy sweetness of the cinnamon roll balances the savory, spicy chili. Get an oversized cinnamon roll (Cinnabon!) and put a cup of chili in the drink holder for dunking, and you’re set for the weekday morning commute or a weekend road trip (for more cross-country Snack ideas, check out the next page). When the chili is more the main event, the combo becomes a certifiable meal later in the day. Pile a shit-ton of chili on top of a cinnamon roll, and you’ve got an open-faced sandwich. On game days, we get a giant pot of chili going on the stove and pop open a coupla tubes of those smaller grocery store cinnamon rolls to serve more like a sweetened biscuit alongside. Makes as many Snacks as you want Heat up the chili and bake or rewarm the cinnamon rolls if needed. Toss plenty of cheddar or processed cheese in the chili, give the chili a stir to melt the cheese, and scatter some onions on top, if you want. Have at it! • All beef or beef with beans chili (homemade, canned, drive thru, or frozen) • Iced cinnamon rolls (homemade, packaged, drive thru, or frozen) • Shredded cheddar cheese or sliced processed (American) cheese • Chopped white onions, if you want In 60 seconds or less Get a Cinnabon + a cup of Wendy’s chili (with cheese, onions optional), and dunk the cinnamon roll in the hot chili! CHEAT SHEET You could use any cinnamon roll and your favorite spicy, beefy chili. We don’t remember if the one we got at the drive- thru actually came with onions (probably), but you definitely want the cheese. If you are going with onions, sweeter white or even red onions are the way to go, but honestly if yellow onions are all we’ve got, we’re gonna use that.Breakfast of Champions 65 this has everything i love in a snack: it’s savory, spicy, sweet, and satisfying. a smash hit! iVY if you aren’t from the south, you might be thinking that chilli is not supposed to be served with cinnamon rolls. and if you’re from australia, you might be thinking chilli shouldn’t be served with anything, ever. (the first time i had a bowl was at an american diner.) Don’t let any of this stop you! this is the sort of thing that is going to be the first to go at every party. XPARTY SHIRT COOKBOOK 68 Sprinkle some cinnamon on top of these and you get that cinnamon roll thing going on with the sugar and cream cheese. IVY You could also go with jam— raspberry, strawberry, cherry, whatever you like—to make more of a fruit Danish. XBreakfast of Champions 69 Danish Toast This recipe is a weekday breakfast game-changer! It’s the Danish cream cheese pastry you always wished you could get at the bakeshop around the corner. With a coupla every- day ingredients, you’re well on your way to showing your parents that you’re not a complete degenerate (just sorta kinda one) and are becoming a functioning member of soci- ety—at least when it comes to being able to make an incred- ible breakfast in minutes! Makes 1 Snack Briefly toast the bread until lightly browned but not too dark (it’s headed back to the toaster or going under a broiler later). Spread ½ to 1 tablespoon of cream cheese on each slice, depending on how cheesy you’re feeling, and sprinkle the brown sugar on top. Cut the butter or margarine into small pieces and scatter it evenly over both toasts. Broil the toasts in the oven or return them to the toaster (only if you have a toaster oven!) until the butter or margarine has melted and, if you’re lucky, the cream cheese begins to brown, about 1 minute. (Browning is not essential! It’s better not to dry up or burn the bread.) The time will vary depending on how close the bread is to the broiler or the power of your toaster oven; watch the toast carefully as the toast can burn. Enjoy your homemade Danishes while you consider the possi- bility of a future life as a professional baker. • 2 slices classic white or wheat sandwich bread • 1 to 2 small spoonfuls (1 to 2 tablespoons) cream cheese • 1 small spoonful (1 tablespoon) packed light or dark brown sugar • 1 to 2 tablespoons salted or unsalted butter or margarine In 60 seconds or less Lightly toast some bread, spread some cream cheese on top, and scatter plenty of brown sugar + butter over them. Broil or toast up the bread again, and you’ve got breakfast! CHEAT SHEET Don’t re-toast these in a slot toaster, you’ll lose all the sugar-cream cheese deliciousness (and muck up your toaster)! We’ve also found that air-frying the toasts, like some people like to do, can dry out the bread. These days we like to put them under a broiler, or as we finally got a toaster oven, just re-toast the bread with all the toppings.PARTY SHIRT COOKBOOK 78 These are easy to polish off so I’d definitely make a couple, and that way you can figure out your best toaster settings—and eat any “failed” experiments. IVY THIS is the way we should all be making egg sandwiches! I’m expecting the convenience food version of these will be in the freezer aisle soon. XBreakfast of Champions 79 Egg-in-a-Pocket This brilliant Snack is the yin to the yang of an egg-in-a-hole. Instead of cutting out a hole in a piece of bread to serve as the cavity to fry an egg, you put the egg yolk in the center of two slices of bread, cut out a pocket sandwich, and toast it up. You are rewarded with a deliciously runny poached egg yolk enclosed by toast that you can butter up and just pop in your mouth. Something this simple could only be improved with a little hot sauce! Makes 1 Snack Lay the sandwich bread on the counter. Slide the yolk onto the center of the bread, sprinkle it with salt, and gently lay the other slice of bread on top. Put a roughly 3-inch (7.5 cm) wide drinking or rocks glass, rim facing down, in the middle of the sandwich, press down firmly on the glass to seal the edges of the bread, and peel away the excess bread to make a sandwich round. The egg should be completely enclosed by the bread; if not crimp down the edges by pressing on them gently. Discard the bread scraps. Toast the sandwich in a toaster oven or slot toaster until the bread is golden brown; you want some good color but the bread shouldn’t be burnt (the amount of time varies by the toaster). Spread a little butter or margarine on both sides of the sand- wich, hit it with a few shakes of hot sauce, and revel in the incredible wonders of a perfectly poached egg. (And even if it’s not perfect, it’s still gonna be good!) • 2 slices white or wheat sandwich bread • 1 large egg yolk • 1 generous pinch salt • Unsalted or salted butter or margarine • A few good shakes of hot sauce, any kind In 60 seconds or less Make a pocket sandwich with 2 slices of sandwich bread + an egg yolk + a pinch of salt and cut it out with a drinking glass so you have a circle of bread enclosing the egg. Put the sandwich in the toaster and when it’s done, spread some butter all over it and douse it in hot sauce. Grab some napkins before you take a bite, it’s messy!
